What is Messianic Judaism?

by on May 18, 2011

Today I answer a question two people asked me this week, what is messianic Judaism?

Messianic Judaism is a movement of Jewish people who believe that Yeshua (Jesus’ original name in Hebrew) is the Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the world. Yeshua is the most Jewish of Jews. Yeshua was a descendant of both Abraham and King David, was raised in a Jewish home and went to synagogue. He perfectly kept the entire Torah (see Galatians 4:4). He taught that He came to fulfill, not set aside, the Torah (see Matthew 5:17-19). He was a rabbi who performed unparalleled miracles, bringing great blessing to the nation of Israel. All His early disciples also lived very Jewish lives. The Messianic movement was entirely Jewish at its inception, and continued to exist as an authentic Jewish movement for 700 years after Yeshua’s death and resurrection.

I class myself as a Christian and follow the rules of torah our Old Testament and agree in all your ways which you are teaching. Although I have seen your video on messianic Judaism. It is possible to be classed as a Christian and follow the ways of yeshua lifestyle and obedience as I do but have always considered myself as a Christian.

  2. Hi Paul

1.What is Messianic Judaism’s view on Paul’s letters to the Corinthians and Galatians?

2.Also, does Messianic Judaism view the teachings of Yeshuha to stop after the four Gospel’s i.e. what’s your view on the rest of the New Testament?

Have you ever heard of or interacted with Seventh-Day Adventist Christians? While we do have a few Messianic congregations amongst us that celebrate the Jewish feasts and holidays, as a whole, we do not. However, like yourselves, we believe in the whole Bible and keeping all 10 of the commandments of God, including remembering, honoring, resting upon and worshipping on the seventh-day Sabbath from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. We also abide by the dietary laws found in Leviticus 11 but encourage a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle as God’s original and healthiest way to eat. The more health conscious amongst us would say a strong “Amen” to many of your health messages, and we have many who share a similar message within our churches also. While any given local congregation may or may not be the best example of this, we also promote modesty in dress and lifestyle that until recent years included no jewelry or make-up. As in any denomination, there is always a spectrum of believers and how they are convicted. We even have some amongst us who believe that all women should wear skirts or dresses and have their heads covered — at least while in church services — but those are not official teachings of the church, as there is no true scriptural basis to firmly support it as a mandate from God. I have enjoyed your videos and teachings — many of them very similar to my own as an Adventist Christian. Personally, I have decided to become a more Torah observant Adventist as these beliefs do not run contrary to my own but rather provide a deeper, more meaningful experience for me. Thank you for your website and videos. They are a blessing.
